For Sharon Harrington, the past represents her greatest asset and her greatest liability in the 2016 race for the next Lee County supervisor of elections.
Harrington, 69, has spent the last 12 years in that role. Before her interim appointment as supervisor in 2004, she spent 15 years in the elections office, working on the department’s finances, human resources and doing the daily grind of registering voters in the pre-digital world.
“Back then, we all filled out the forms for the voter,” Harrington said. “Once we got the address, we’d have to go to a map and find out what precinct they were in. Everything was pretty much manual. Everybody had to help out. Everybody was whatever your title was ‘plus’.”
