If you\u2019ve dipped your toes into the San Francisco Bay Area housing market, you know it\u2019s sizzling hot. The Bay Area has the fastest turnaround<\/a> of home sales in not just California, but in the nation.<\/p>\n

But what does a fast housing turnaround mean in practice? It means you\u2019ll be up against quite a bit of competition. And hot markets favor cash bids<\/a> and buyers who can guarantee a quick closing.<\/p>\n

We took a look at some of the most popular housing markets in California, and just how quickly homes are getting snapped up. Here\u2019s what we found:<\/p>\n

Understanding \u201cdays on the market\u201d<\/h2>\n

Days on the market, or DOM, is a key real estate metric that can help buyers determine how hot a housing market is by seeing how quickly houses get snapped up.<\/p>\n

The DOM is measured from the time a property is listed for sale on the multiple listing services (MLS) to the date when the seller has a signed contract for the property.<\/p>\n

Nationwide, homes stay on the market<\/a> for 46 days on average, according to a January 2019 report from the National Association of Realtors. In the luxury market, homes across the country are on the market for an average<\/a> of 56 days, according to an August 2019 report from the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing.<\/p>\n

But in some of the Bay Area\u2019s most competitive markets, homes fly off the market in half that time.<\/p>\n

California remains hyper-competitive<\/h2>\n

We mined July 2019 sales activity data<\/a> from the California Association of Realtors to discover where homes are selling the quickest in The Golden State.<\/p>\n

Overall, single-family homes in the San Francisco Bay Area were only on the market for 29 days, according to the latest figures. That compares to 36 days for <\/span>houses for sale in the Los Angeles area<\/span><\/a>, 35 days in the Central Coast market, 27 days in the Central Valley, and 41.5 in the Inland Empire.<\/p>\n

\nMedian home sold price: $1.48 million<\/p>\n

2. Santa Clara<\/b>
\nDays on market: 22
\nMedian home sold price: $1.15 million<\/p>\n

3. Contra Costa<\/b>
\nDays on market: 23
\nMedian home sold price: $612,500<\/p>\n

4. Fresno<\/b>
\nDays on market: 23
\nMedian home sold price: $266,500<\/p>\n

5. Alameda<\/b>
\nDays on market: 24
\nMedian home sold price: $850,000<\/p>\n

6. San Francisco<\/b>
\nDays on market: 25
\nMedian home sold price: $1.5 million<\/p>\n

7. Sacramento<\/b>
\nDays on market: 25
\nMedian home sold price: $364,500<\/p>\n

8. San Diego<\/b>
\nDays on market: 27
\nMedian home sold price: $618,500<\/p>\n

9. Monterey<\/b>
\nDays on market: 28
\nMedian home sold price: $640,000<\/p>\n

10. Orange County<\/b>
