While many homeowners don\u2019t know what\u2019s in the crawl space beneath their home \u2014 and some might not even realize they have a crawl space \u2014 it\u2019s possible that moisture or standing water could be lurking there, waiting to put a dent in your home\u2019s value<\/a>. According to a report, flood damages amount to nearly $8 billion in the U.S. annually. Water damage is a common household problem, with around 1 in 60 insured homes<\/a> making insurance claims to restore water or freezing damage.<\/p>\n

Top real estate agent Alison Harris<\/a> of Savannah, Georgia, says that having water in a crawl space is \u201ccertainly not uncommon\u201d in her area, where elevation is low. However, she says water in a crawl space can affect any home regardless of location.<\/p>\n

Water can creep into a crawl space in several ways, including from gutter and downspout issues, a downward sloping of the ground towards a home, or soil around the house being over-saturated. In all of these cases, the water comes from rain or snowfall. There\u2019s also the rare possibility of a natural spring below the home sending water gurgling upwards, which is pricier to deal with and will likely require the installation of a sump pump.<\/p>\n

As a result, the moisture from the water in a crawl space can damage a home\u2019s foundation<\/a>, as well as bring pests, mold, and even higher energy bills. It can also cause warping and cupping of the floorboards above. And that unwanted water damage can disrupt your home sale<\/a>.<\/p>\n
