Before you can get rid of dust mites, it&#8217;s helpful to know what you&#8217;re dealing with and where to find the little buggers.<\/p>\n<h3>What dust mites are<\/h3>\n<p>Dust mites are microscopic, insect-like arthropods that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafa.org\/dust-mite-allergy\/\">only 1\/4 to 1\/3 millimeters long<\/a>. Under a microscope, they look like tiny white spiders. The males can live a month or more, while females can live <a href=\"https:\/\/news.osu.edu\/dust-mites\/\">up to 90 days<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dust mites <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/agents\/allergens\/dustmites\/index.cfm\">feed on flakes of dead skin<\/a> shed by people and animals. They thrive in houses since each person sheds up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafa.org\/dust-mite-allergy\/\">1.5 grams<\/a> of dead skin cells per day. That&#8217;s enough to feed up to one million dust mites!<\/p>\n<h3>What dust mites aren&#8217;t<\/h3>\n<p>Dust mites are not parasites. Unlike bedbugs, they don&#8217;t bite or sting. Nor do they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/clean-air\/at-home\/indoor-air-pollutants\/dust-mites\">burrow<\/a> into your body.<\/p>\n<p>However, they can cause skin rashes and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/dust-mites-bites\">allergic reactions<\/a> like sneezing and postnasal drip. Those reactions are typically the result of inhaling dust mites&#8217; skin and fecal matter.<\/p>\n<h3>Where dust mites live<\/h3>\n<p>Dust mites are found everywhere around the world, although they favor hot, humid climates. Because dust mites <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/clean-air\/at-home\/indoor-air-pollutants\/dust-mites\">absorb moisture from the air<\/a> rather than drinking it, they cannot survive in arid regions.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of dust mites may be living in your house \u2014 specifically, in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/allergies\/carpet-allergies\">carpet<\/a>, upholstered furniture, bedding, mattress, and stuffed animals. Anywhere dead skin cells accumulate, there&#8217;s potential to find dust mites. And because they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/dust-mites-bites\">burrow into cloth fibers<\/a>, they even tag along when you move and travel. So prevalent are they that nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12589364\/\">four out of five homes<\/a> in the U.S. exhibit detectable levels of dust mite allergens.<\/p>\n<h2>Dust mite allergies and other complications<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers identified two types of dust mite allergens, using data from a <a href=\"https:\/\/factor.niehs.nih.gov\/2018\/1\/papers\/allergens\/index.htm\">2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey<\/a> of almost 7,000 U.S. homes. The presence of pets influenced the level of indoor allergens \u2014 as did type, age, and location, age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status of residents.<\/p>\n<p>Some people are more susceptible to physical reactions to dust mites in the house. A study by NIEHS-funded scientists uncovered a <a href=\"https:\/\/factor.niehs.nih.gov\/2017\/11\/papers\/asthma\/index.htm\">mucus-regulating gene<\/a> that causes the lungs to produce too much mucus as a defense against pollutants and allergens, which results in airway obstruction.<a href=\"https:\/\/factor.niehs.nih.gov\/2017\/11\/papers\/asthma\/index.htm\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chronic, continued exposure to dust mites in the home can severely impact the health of people who have asthma or a sensitivity to allergens and dust mites, which cause an immune system response known as <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/classic\/\/research\/apr\/reports\/l3041.pdf\">allergic rhinitis<\/a>. Even in the cleanest of homes, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/agents\/allergens\/dustmites\/index.cfm\">impossible to eliminate dust mites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, you can significantly reduce the number of dust mites in your house by taking steps to remove them and prevent them from coming back.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colonialpest.com\/2012\/03\/21\/steps-to-reduce-house-dust-mite-allergens\/\">pesticides do not get rid of dust mites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Cause: Humidity<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/clean-air\/at-home\/indoor-air-pollutants\/dust-mites\">Humidity<\/a> is a key factor in determining whether a house has a high concentration of dust mites, but it&#8217;s not the only one. Older homes and homes with a musty smell tend to have more dust mites since these homes are often poorly ventilated and trap moisture indoors.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, that musty &#8220;old house&#8221; smell comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homelight.com\/blog\/how-to-get-rid-of-old-house-smell\/\">mVOCs<\/a> \u2014 microbial volatile organic compounds emitted by decaying biological growths, mold, bacteria, and biofilm. That&#8217;s why most exposure occurs when homeowners are sleeping or <a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/10.1289\/ehp.1307922\">disturb the dust during activities<\/a> such as making the bed.<a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/10.1289\/ehp.1307922\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Solution<\/h3>\n<p>Reduce places where dust mites can hide by removing some furniture, swapping some upholstered seating pieces for seats with hard surfaces, and trading drapes and curtains for blinds.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips to combat dust mites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Replace carpeting with hardwood floors.<\/li>\n<li>Mop floors often.
