It\u2019s made up of thin fibers that are strong, flexible, and resistant to corrosion. The fibers also possess the ability to withstand heat and flame. With qualities like these, it\u2019s no wonder that the mineral was added to things like cement, cloth, paper, plastic, and more. When the fibers are inhaled, scar-like tissue forms on the lungs, and this is called asbestosis. The buildup causes the lungs to lose their ability to function properly, thus leading to disability and death.<\/p>\n<p>Scientific study shows that asbestos exposure can lead to various types of cancer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesothelioma.com\/mesothelioma\/\">Mesothelioma cancer<\/a> is caused exclusively by asbestos and forms in the lining of the lungs or abdomen. Other cancers linked to asbestos include ovarian cancer and laryngeal cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Asbestos is also linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestos.com\/asbestos\/\">other diseases<\/a> like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pleural effusions<\/li>\n<li>Pleural plaques<\/li>\n<li>Pleuritis<\/li>\n<li>Diffuse pleural thickening<\/li>\n<li>COPD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As harmful as asbestos can be, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestos.com\/mesothelioma-lawyer\/legislation\/ban\/\">hasn\u2019t banned the use of it<\/a>. The most common areas where asbestos products would be used include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Insulation around pipes, boilers, air ducts, stoves and furnaces<\/li>\n<li>Floor tiles, roofing tiles, shingles and outdoor siding<\/li>\n<li>Soundproofing materials on the walls and ceiling<\/li>\n<li>Decorative materials or textures on the walls or ceiling (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.homelight.com\/blog\/does-removing-popcorn-ceiling-increase-home-value\/\">popcorn ceilings<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Asbestos is a threat to someone\u2019s health when the product containing asbestos has been damaged or disturbed and the fibers become airborne. You can do a cursory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homelight.com\/blog\/home-inspection-process\/\">inspection of your home<\/a> and take note of any areas that show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisoldhouse.com\/home-safety\/21014901\/remove-asbestos-in-homes\">signs of wear or damages<\/a>. To see the microscopic fibers, you would have to hire an asbestos inspector and have tests done.
