What is reverse decluttering, and why is it different?<\/h2>\n

Lucci explains that with traditional decluttering<\/a> to downsize, most home sellers look at every item in the house. They might create three piles: keep, maybe, and definitely get rid of. But with reverse decluttering, you start with only the \u201ckeep\u201d pile \u2014 the items you love, use all the time, or truly need in your next home.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t say things like, \u2018Well, this might have sentimental value,’ or \u2018Maybe I\u2019ll use this later.\u2019\u201d Lucci says. \u201cYou\u2019ll end up paying for storage, and you won\u2019t be able to get out of it. Take what you love and what you must have with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once these must-haves are set aside, everything else can go into the \u201cmaybe\u201d pile for review, but you will have already made an enormous stride. Reverse declutter flips your thinking from \u201cWhat do I need to get rid of?\u201d to \u201cWhat do I absolutely want to keep in my life?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just regular decluttering. It\u2019s totally different,\u201d Lucci says. She adds, \u201cBut if you\u2019re not sure you\u2019re going to use something and you decide to put it in storage, you need to put a deadline on that storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n
