The legendary Lyle Laeger caught me one day at my wife Ann Heriza Bryan's coffee house in Baker City, Mad Matilda's, and asked if I would be interested in buying the home downtown where he had had his office for several years. The home held a special place for Ann, having been built originally by her grandparents, F.C. and Mattie Vaughan, as an in town retirement home and office. The timing, as real estate goes, was just a little off given that we had just purchased a home. But, in one of those purely innocent moments and half kidding, I mentioned that he might want to sell me the real estate company. Within moments we had a deal!
