  • Debbie and I connected, but did no business

While polite and cordial during the rental viewing and over the phone, I mentioned honestly some things that might come up in my partner's background check at the end of the tour. What followed were rapid-fire questions such as "What's his credit score? What is he sober from? Does he still drink? Does he smoke cigarettes? Does he smoke marijuana?" Instead of a professional, "Thank you for telling me, I'll keep that in mind", I felt like my partner and I were standing trial. All of this was before we even submitted an application. The things I mentioned were due to issues of addiction, which are considered a disability under the ADA...she is not legally allowed to ask some of those questions. Of course, it's the landlord's prerogative to be as picky as they want when it comes to tenants, but the kind of treatment I received was needlessly harsh and devoid of compassion. Fortunately, we have now leased a 3b 2ba for less than the 2b 2ba house she showed to me. Some education on anti-discrimination laws and fair housing is needed for this realtor.

I rented a home from Debbie in the Garden Oaks area. The house had terrible touch up paint, a broken oven, and debris from a floor renovation. During the lease there was a water leak and she asked that I turn the water off. She didn't want to call a plumber because it was Sunday and would be expensive (her words). When I agreed but only for a reduction in rent, she was offended. I painted the home and installed an alarm. Upon move out she charged $50 for screws that were up from hanging pictures. In general she was a terrible landlord. I would not advise renting from her.
