To be in the top 1% of your profession doesn’t come easy; it takes an incredible amount of ground work, persistence, energy, commitment and most of all love. Nan Allen has all of these attributes. At first meeting, you notice the elegant presence, the warm smile, the directness of speech and gaze, and you finally realize that this woman knows who she is and what makes her happy, and how to get it. Coming from a scientific background in microbiology, she took a circuitous route to her chosen career. Leaving Connecticut at 23 to come to California she settled in Berkeley and worked for Lawrence Labs, then on to San Francisco where she worked in Cancer research at U.C. Medical Center. Nowadays Nan loves to teach and exercises with the deep water aerobics group “Water Gym” to stay fit and enjoy a full and energetic life.
