Born in rural southeastern Wisconsin on her father's family's original land grant farm that is still retained by the family, she is the oldest of five children. This active household was multi-generational with grandmother, great uncle and great aunt residing along with parents and children. Her father's veterinary practice was also located on this working farm. She loved assisting her father with the animals, always had her own pony to ride and excelled in the same one room school house that her father attended. In 1964 the growing family moved to Lexington, Kentucky. If you ask her, Martha will tell you she is a Kentucky girl as she loves this beautiful state where she attended junior high, high school and college where she again excelled in academics.
