Adventurous. Resilient. Determined. Driven. Those are four powerful words that describe the life of Robin Phillips. From Europe to the Bahamas, from restauranteur to real estate, and from autism to cancer, she has carved a path that underscores who she is and what she is truly meant to do. And it all began with someone telling her what she couldn’t do. At the age of 15, Robin was spending 16 hours a week practicing gymnastics. Despite her talent, her changing body at that age was making it more difficult for her to keep up in this competitive field, and her coach told her she should quit, that she would never be good enough for the Olympics. That year, she won the Ohio Gymnastic Championship in both vault and balance beam. Then she quit…on her own terms. And that’s only the beginning. As for her career, it began right out of college in Chicago, Munich and Stockholm, as a financial analyst with Baxter International. She loved numbers and analyzing data. She traveled quite a bit on the trains, which was her favorite part of traveling through Europe, aside from the fast cars. Then she met her husband David while on vacation in the Bahamas (he’s originally from West Sussex, England), and here begins the rest of the story. Along came two beautiful children, and yet challenges that no parent wants to face. Their son was diagnosed with high functioning autism (Asperger’s), despite being in the 99th percentile of intelligence. He was smart enough to cure cancer, but debilitated by something as simple as crossing the threshold of a doorway. He persisted through the ups and downs and even tried college and made it to a few classes. Meanwhile, their daughter, who spent most of her life in the shadow of her brother’s challenges, had grown mature beyond her years, despite what Robin calls their lack of parenting skills to handle the situation. As Robin says, children are truly amazing, and shape who we are in a way that humbles even the most determined. In 2016, there came another blow to the family. Robin was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent an unconventional 12-hour reconstructive surgery which few surgeons in the U.S. can do. However, she developed complications with a rare micro bacterial infection afterward that required months of care at a wound center, including wearing a wound pump daily to meetings and listing appointments. It was another humbling time, and one that proved she could overcome any situation. Which brings us to how Robin got into real estate. She and David spent 16 years in Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas, where they owned and operated a resort and two restaurants, eventually becoming the largest employer on the island. They also invested in real estate, and developed twelve acres by building 15 homes and serving as property managers for those homes as well. Then they added a 45 slip marina, laying many of the boards themselves by hand. They love the lifestyle and still have a home there today. Yes, life was challenging. But life is short. And Robin is no shrinking violet. She refused to accept those challenges as her only story, and decided to write a few chapters of her own. She took her next adventure to the Charleston real estate world. And she was, well, incredible at it. In fact, she has been named in the top 5% of Realtors in Charleston in just six short years, and has also received the Realtor of Distinction award and a feature in Top Agent Magazine. She and David live in Charleston today, where she operates her real estate team, The Robin Group, and enjoys life with their two amazing children, William and Alexandra.
