How the New York Transfer Tax is Calculated
New York’s transfer tax, known as a real estate transfer tax, is calculated at a rate of $2.00 per $500 of the property’s sale price. The state also has a “mansion tax,” which is an additional tax of 1% of the sale price, applicable to residences when the value is $1 million or higher.
For example, if you sold your home for $436,000 (New York’s median home price), you could expect to pay $1,744 in New York transfer taxes.
Another Transfer Tax New York Sellers Typically Pay
County taxes can vary relative to the state, in addition to any city and state taxes. For example, in Broome County in New York, the county transfer tax is $5 per $1000, with a portion going to the state and the other to the county.
