Alvaro is a Bay Area native and grew up in San Jose where he attended Independence High School. He graduated from Santa Clara University in 2003 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Spanish. Alvaro has strong ties to his community and is a volunteer at organizations that promote higher education for students. He currently is a mentor for students in the electronics academy at Overfelt High School, and during his spare time he enjoys mountain biking at the Almaden and Santa Teresa Foothills
